Paul’s overriding preoccupation in these two letters is that the truth should be faithfully guarded and handed on to others. He is deeply concerned for the future of the gospel, and for the younger pastors entrusted with its care and propagation.

Ephesus, and in particular that he might command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer … (3b). Paul’s preoccupation in this first chapter is with the importance of maintaining true or ‘sound’ doctrine, and of refuting ‘false’ doctrine.
